On April 12, 2018 in Hanoi, Vietnam National Space Center – Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology collaborated with Kongsberg Satellite Services Company (KSAT) to organize a Workshop on Radar Satellite Imaging Technology Application in Maritime Monitoring & Surveillance Services.
Attending the workshop, there were leaders from Vietnam National Space Center, representatives from KSAT and experts from related ministries such as Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Ministry of Transport, Ministry of National Defense, Ministry of Public Security, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, etc.
KSAT representative giving information about Maritime Monitoring & Surveillance Services
The workshop aims to provide information on the importance of using satellite data as well as remote sensing satellites for maritime monitoring & surveillance; and the benefits of remote sensing radar data and associated information sources.
At the workshop, KSAT representatives introduced the possibility of satellite technology application in maritime monitoring & surveillance. Two particular applications presented by KSAT representatives were Oil Spill Monitoring and Ship Detection. In details, Oil Spill Monitoring application helps to accurately identify the source of pollution as well as the object causing the problem, which is very important for low cost prevention, handling, treatment and remediation processes. Similar to Oil Spill Monitoring, Ship Detection application provides the ability to detect ships using satellite data by combining Ship Tracking – Automatic Identification System (AIS) information with satellite Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and high resolution optical (EO) images.
In order to illustrate their presentation, KSAT representative provided examples and real cases, based on which, they also proposed Maritime Monitoring & Surveillance Services Applications in Vietnam.
Vietnam National Space Center representatives giving questions
During the workshop, leaders of Vietnam National Space Center and experts from other ministries and divisions also discussed together in details about the issues that KSAT had presented.
KSAT is known as a Norwegian state owned commercial company and world leading Space Services provider in the field of Ground Stations and Maritime Monitoring Services using Low Earth Orbiting (LEO) satellites (Especially Synthetic Aperture Radar – SAR). KSAT was established in 1967 with its headquarters situated in Troms, Norway.
