On March 13-14, 2025, workshop “Application Ideas for ALOS-2 and SAR Satellite Data in Vietnam” took place at the Vietnam Space Center (VNSC). This event was organized in collaboration with Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), Remote Sensing Technology Center of Japan (RESTEC), and Keio University. The workshop attracted 35 participants, including 30 domestic representatives from various organizations such as National Remote Sensing Department, Military Mapping Department, Space Technology Institute, Institute of Geography, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, and the University of Natural Resources and Environment and 5 foreign representatives from JAXA, RESTEC, and Keio University.

Participants of the workshop
The workshop “Application Ideas for ALOS-2 and SAR Satellite Data in Vietnam” is the next collaborative event in a series of workshops held in 2023 between VNSC, JAXA, and RESTEC. Previous training sessions focused on utilizing ALOS-2 data within Google Earth Engine (GEE) to address specific environmental issues in each country, helping participants enhance their expertise in working with satellite data. However, having technical knowledge about using satellite data is not enough; participants also need to be empowered with skills to translate detailed information from the data into innovative ideas and feasible implementation processes. Therefore, this workshop expands its focus beyond exploring the capabilities of the ALOS-2 satellite dataset to equip participants with broader skills in idea generation and problem-solving. In this way, the workshop not only supports the development of technical expertise but also fosters the creative thinking and strategic approaches necessary to turn concepts into impactful solutions that address current environmental and social challenges.

Participants work in groups and present reports at the workshop.
At the workshop, participants worked in groups to develop ideas for applying satellite data to address various challenges. Specifically, at the end of the workshop, five working groups completed and presented reports on the application of satellite data in the following areas:
Urbanization monitoring
Flood detection and monitoring
Estimating carbon credits
Automated GHG management and automated forest carbon management
Home purchasing platform
These application ideas will be evaluated by JAXA and RESTEC in the upcoming period. Subsequently, JAXA will announce the selected ideas for further development and research.
